Zimbabwe’s head coach Michael Nees has emphasized the strength and potential of Nigeria’s Super Eagles as his team prepares for the resumption of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Speaking to CAFonline, Nees acknowledged Nigeria’s formidable status in African football, describing them as a “wounded lion” but one that remains “very dangerous.”

The Super Eagles, currently competing in Group C of the qualifiers, possess capabilities that far surpass their current standing, according to Nees.

He noted that their rich history and reputation as one of Africa’s premier footballing nations make them a daunting opponent.

“Nigeria remains one of the best teams in African football,” Nees said. “Facing them will be a challenge, but we will approach it step by step, game by game, and even training by training. Football has many variables, and we need to prepare carefully.”

Zimbabwe is set to take on Nigeria a few days after their match against Rwanda when the qualifiers resume in March.

The encounter against the Super Eagles is anticipated to be a critical test for Nees and his squad.

Reflecting on past encounters between the two sides, the coach recalled their last meeting, which ended in a 1-1 draw.

However, with stakes higher than ever in the World Cup qualification race, both teams are expected to approach the match with renewed intensity.

The Zimbabwean squad will need to strategize carefully to compete against a Nigerian team eager to reaffirm its dominance on the continent.

Nees’ comments highlight the respect and caution with which Zimbabwe is approaching this challenge while underscoring the unpredictable nature of football.

As the qualifiers heat up, fans across the continent will be watching closely to see how Zimbabwe measures up against Nigeria’s formidable lineup.

The March fixtures promise to deliver high-stakes football, with both teams aiming to strengthen their bids for a spot at the global tournament.
