ZED snatch stoppage-time win to hand El Qanah first league defeat

ZED secured a dramatic 2-1 victory over El Qanah with a stoppage-time winner in the fifth round of the league season at Cairo Stadium.

The match was goalless at half-time, but ZED took the lead four minutes after the restart. Ahmed Atef produced an excellent finish from outside the penalty area in the 49th minute, sending the ball into the goalkeeper’s top-left corner.

El Qanah levelled from the penalty spot in the 83rd minute after the ball struck ZED defender Abdullah Bakry’s hand inside the area. El Qanah striker Mohamed Hamdy Zaky converted the resulting penalty past goalkeeper Ali Lotfy.

With the game appearing to be heading for a draw, substitute Mohamed Hussein settled the contest in the third minute of added time. He powered a header into the net to give ZED all three points.

The result moved ZED up to 10th place with seven points, while El Qanah remained 11th on six points.

It was El Qanah’s first defeat of the season. Before this match, they had recorded one win, against Ceramica Cleopatra, and three draws against El Gouna, Wadi Degla and Tala’ea El Gaish.

ZED also scored more than once in a match for the first time since the league campaign began.
