Zanzibar is set to play a central role in the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), with the island hosting Group D matches in next year’s tournament.
This move signals a major win for Zanzibar’s sporting ambitions and further cements its place in African football.
CAF confirmed on Thursday that Zanzibar had been named one of the official host venues. The Amaan Stadium, which successfully staged the 2024/25 CAF Confederation Cup Final in May, will welcome top-tier nations including Senegal, Congo, Sudan, and Nigeria during the group stage.
“This inclusion shows our commitment to expanding the reach and inclusivity of African football,” said CAF in a statement.
The CHAN 2024 tournament will be co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, and will run from August 2 to 30, 2025. This marks the first time East Africa will host the tournament since Rwanda welcomed it in 2016.
