Lameck Banda is inching closer to making his return to competitive football after months of injury and a dispute between his club, Lecce, and the Zambian Football Federation.
The 24-year-old winger, who has been sidelined since his ankle injury, could be back on the pitch by the end of February, bringing much-needed relief to both his club and himself as he seeks to kick-start his season.
Banda’s troublesome journey began when he was called up by the Zambian national team while recovering from an ankle injury.
Despite Lecce’s reservations about his fitness, the club was obligated by FIFA regulations to allow the winger to join his national squad.
This decision resulted in a long and exhausting trip for Banda, which culminated in a diagnosis of a fractured medial malleolus in his left ankle.
Consequently, the player had to return to Italy for surgery and an extensive rehabilitation process.
Now, several weeks into his recovery, the latest medical reports are promising, and Banda’s return to action is expected by the end of February.
This marks a significant milestone for Lecce, who will be hoping to have the winger back in full form as they push through the remainder of their Serie A campaign.
Should Banda return as scheduled, he will face the dual challenge of regaining his match fitness and finding his scoring form.
Prior to his injury, Banda made ten appearances for Lecce but failed to score a goal.
With plenty to prove, the 24-year-old will be determined to make up for lost time, both in Serie A and for his national team, Zambia. His return could very well be the catalyst for a positive turn in his season.
