Zambian governmnet cuts financial support to national team over recent poor performances
The Government of Zambia has announced the suspension of financial support to the Football Association of Zambia’s (FAZ) senior men’s national team following a series of disappointing results in recent international matches.
In a joint statement issued by the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Arts and the National Sports Council of Zambia, the government expressed frustration over the team’s underwhelming performances despite what it described as substantial public investment.
The statement noted that state funds had been allocated to cover key expenses, including accommodation, air tickets, winning bonuses, and a portion of the head coach’s salary.
Citing current economic challenges, the ministry said it had become necessary to re-evaluate the justification for continued government funding of the national team.
It has since directed FAZ to submit a comprehensive report detailing the measures being taken to improve performance, plans to enhance accountability and transparency, and an assessment of how public resources have been utilised.
The government stressed that financial backing for the national team must go hand in hand with responsibility and measurable progress on the pitch.
While reaffirming its broader commitment to football development across the country, the ministry emphasised that accountability to taxpayers remains a top priority.
