Charly Musonda has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 28, drawing the curtain on a career that once promised so much but was ultimately derailed by persistent injury struggles and setbacks.
The Belgian midfielder confirmed his decision on Monday through a heartfelt message shared on his Instagram account.
In it, Musonda reflected on his journey in the game, thanked those who supported him, and hinted at his desire to remain involved in football in a different capacity.
“Today I announce that I am stepping away from 11-a-side football, but not completely from the game I have always loved,” Musonda wrote. “I still believe I have a lot to offer, especially to the best players in the world who need a stage.”
A product of Chelsea’s academy, Musonda was once considered one of the most gifted young prospects in European football.
Though his technical talent was evident, a series of serious injuries prevented him from fulfilling that early potential.
His final professional club was Anorthosis Famagusta FC in Cyprus.
Over the course of his career, Musonda also played for Real Betis, Celtic Glasgow, Vitesse Arnhem, and Levante.
Despite showing flashes of brilliance, his time on the pitch was limited, particularly during his spell at Chelsea where injuries heavily restricted his appearances.
“I have been through so much in recent years, so many emotions, joys, sadness… It has made me realize that there are many great talents, with beautiful stories, who have experienced or are experiencing similar obstacles, with much to give but little help,” he continued in his message.
Musonda went on to express gratitude to his family and those who had shaped his development from a young age.
“For now, I want to thank my family for their unwavering support through thick and thin: you are the best. Thank you to all the players I have played with, whether at club level, at school, on the street or in competition.”
He also paid tribute to the many coaches who guided him throughout his career, including his father, Charly Musonda Sr., a former Zambia international.
“Thank you to my idols, sources of inspiration, and to all the coaches I have known, starting with my father, through the youth and academy coaches, to the first-team coaches. I have been truly blessed.”
Musonda concluded his statement with optimism about the future, suggesting his journey in football is far from over.
“This is not a goodbye, but a new beginning. I now hope to be able to contribute, even in a small way, to making the world of football a better place. Thank you, and see you soon!”
