It’s a solemn occasion as Zambia commemorates the 20th anniversary of the tragic plane crash that claimed the lives of the entire Zambian national football team. The team was en route to a 1994 World Cup qualifying match against Senegal when the plane crashed off the coast of Libreville, Gabon.
In remembrance of this heartbreaking event, Zambia will host Zimbabwe in a friendly match this Sunday. The significance of the date is further emphasized by the fact that Zambia, in 2012, paid tribute to the lost team by winning the African Cup of Nations. Since then, the country has decided to commemorate this poignant date every five years.
For this special occasion, coach Hervé Renard has selected a squad of 22 players, all from the local championship, to participate in this memorial fixture.
List of Goalkeepers:
- Davy Kaumbwa (Green Buffaloes)
- Rabson Mucheleng’anga (Nchanga Rangers)
- Masiye Simulume (Chindiwn Sentries)
The match stands not only as a footballing event but as a poignant tribute to the memory of those who lost their lives in the tragic plane crash two decades ago.
