Zamalek threaten CAF Champions League withdrawal over possible Al Ahly inclusion

Egyptian giants Zamalek have reportedly threatened to withdraw from the upcoming CAF Champions League campaign if the Confederation of African Football (CAF) approves plans to expand the number of participating teams and allows arch-rivals Al Ahly to enter the competition.

The Cairo-based club is strongly opposed to any proposed changes that could create a pathway for Al Ahly to compete in Africa’s premier club competition, with the rivalry between the two Egyptian powerhouses intensifying over the issue.

Reports indicate that Zamalek believe any decision to increase the number of teams and include Al Ahly would be unfair and could undermine the qualification process already established by CAF.

The White Knights are said to have communicated their position firmly, warning that they could consider pulling out of the tournament if CAF proceeds with the proposed adjustments.

The possible inclusion of Al Ahly has become a major talking point due to the club’s status as one of Africa’s most successful sides, having dominated continental football over the years.

Zamalek and Al Ahly share one of the biggest rivalries in African football, with both clubs historically competing for domestic honours in Egypt while also battling for supremacy on the continent.

CAF is yet to officially confirm any changes to the Champions League format or announce whether additional teams will be admitted. However, any decision involving the participation of Al Ahly is expected to generate significant reactions from clubs across the continent.
