Zamalek SC has voiced its displeasure after being fined EGP 100,000 for chants from fans during the opening league game against Ceramica Cleopatra.
The club’s board, led by Hussein Labib, is reviewing the complaint from the Al Ahly and Modern Sport match observer and insists all clubs should be held to the same standards.
Tharwat Sweilem of the Egyptian Football Association said on Monday night that the penalty would be doubled if the incident happened again, possibly leading to matches without fans. His comments drew frustration from Zamalek officials, who believe there is a double standard in handling fan misconduct.
The Clubs Association confirmed the fine on Tuesday, matching Sweilem’s earlier statement.
“There is a state of anger due to Tharwat Sweilem’s statements, after he confirmed that Zamalek would be punished. When asked about punishing Al-Ahly fans for their transgressions and chants against Modern Sport player Hossam Hassan, his answer was vague and he referred the matter to the referee’s report and the match supervisor,” a source told Kooora.
“A complaint will be filed against the Al Ahly and Modern Sport match observer for not mentioning the attack on Hossam Hassan.”
