Zamalek protest refereeing as club files urgent league fairness complaint
Zamalek have issued a strongly worded official statement attacking recent refereeing decisions, accusing officials of pushing the Egyptian Premier League in “one direction.”
The club broke its silence hours before facing Haras El Hodood, submitting an urgent complaint to the Egyptian Football Association.
Their objection focuses on appointing referee Hamada El Qalawi for the match, citing what they describe as a “previous record of mistakes” in last season’s meeting between the same teams and questioning the criteria used by the Referees Committee.
Zamalek also widened their criticism to include yesterday’s clash between rivals Al Ahly and El Gouna, demanding a clear explanation for what they view as serious refereeing errors.
The club accused referee Amin Omar of “lack of neutrality,” insisting his decisions affected the course of the game and “struck at the heart of justice and integrity.” The phrase “the league is moving in one direction” featured prominently in the statement, underlining growing frustration about transparency at a decisive stage of the season.
These complaints come as the title race heats up. Al Ahly’s hard-fought win over El Gouna, thanks to Emam Ashour’s goal, lifted them to second place on 33 points, just behind leaders Ceramica Cleopatra.
Zamalek, meanwhile, go into tonight’s game in third with 31 points, knowing every refereeing decision could prove crucial in the battle for the championship.
