Zamalek official responds to CAF sanctions: “Final organization wasn’t our responsibility”
In an exclusive statement to “Barlaman Sport,” the official mentioned that Zamalek’s management plans to submit a detailed appeal against the sanctions imposed on the club.
“The organization of the final against RS Berkane was not the responsibility of Zamalek,” the official asserted, adding, “The club is not solely accountable for the event’s organization. The company contracted by CAF holds that responsibility.”
The official is optimistic that the penalties, which include a $200,000 fine and a ban on spectators for four matches (two of which are suspended), will be reduced upon review.
CAF imposed these sanctions on Zamalek following the final of the CAF Confederation Cup, in which Zamalek triumphed over RS Berkane.
The official elaborated that the $200,000 fine represents approximately 10% of the prize money awarded to Zamalek for their victory in the tournament.
The final match was marred by organizational issues before, during, and after the game, including disruptions during the medal and trophy presentation ceremony.
The Zamalek official emphasized that these problems were not due to the club’s actions but rather the contracted event management company’s failures.
In the same communication with “Barlaman Sport,” the official clarified that the CAF disciplinary committee had not issued any sanctions against RS Berkane’s officials.
Zamalek’s management remains confident that their appeal will lead to a reduction in the sanctions, underscoring their position that the club should not be held accountable for organizational failures beyond their control.
