Former Zamalek defender Amir Azmy Megahed has backed current first-team coach Moataz Gamal to remain in charge, arguing that the club’s financial situation makes it impractical to hire a high-profile foreign manager.
In a televised interview, Megahed said Zamalek is facing a severe financial crisis, with outstanding payments owed to former players and coaches, as well as current athletes across football and other sports.
He added that these constraints leave the board, led by Hussein Labib, with little option but to avoid expensive coaching appointments.
“With the club’s current financial burdens, it is impossible to bring in a foreign coach with a strong track record,” Megahed explained.
“The only feasible option would be to turn to less experienced coaches. In this context, continuing with Moataz Gamal is the best choice, especially since his results have been positive and there is no need to take risks with a new appointment.”
Megahed also praised the performance of right-back Mohamed Ibrahim in Zamalek’s match against Al-Masry Al-Portsaidi on Sunday, January 25, 2026, noting that Ibrahim delivered an impressive display and proved a valuable asset in the absence of injured captain Omar Gaber.
The former Zamalek star stressed that stability within the coaching staff is crucial for maintaining the team’s form, particularly with a busy schedule of domestic and continental competitions ahead.
He insisted that retaining Gamal is the safest path for the club at present.
Megahed also urged the administration to focus on nurturing young talent, arguing that Zamalek still possesses the necessary components for success despite ongoing financial and administrative challenges
