Zamalek legend Shikabala blasts Al Ahly’s ‘lost identity’ after Ceramica Cleopatra draw
Zamalek legend Mahmoud Abdel-Razek Shikabala has launched a scathing assessment of Al Ahly SC following their frustrating 1-1 draw with Ceramica Cleopatra FC in the opening round of the decisive stage of the Egyptian Premier League.
The result saw the Red Devils drop two crucial points in their title charge, raising fresh concerns about the team’s current form and mentality.
Speaking on the “Al-Kora Ma’a Fayek” program on MBC Egypt 2, Shikabala did not hold back in his criticism, claiming that the identity of Al Ahly has significantly declined.
“The character of Al Ahly club has changed,” Shikabala said. “The coach seems to have been away from the team for a while and does not have the personality of a big coach. His behavior on the sidelines is directly reflected in the players’ performance on the pitch.”
Shikabala emphasized the crucial influence a coach has on his squad, warning that instability on the touchline inevitably translates into poor performances.
“The player is influenced by his coach. If the coach is nervous or makes wrong decisions, this will negatively affect the team,” he added.
Drawing comparisons with Al Ahly’s golden era, the Zamalek legend highlighted how strong leadership once kept a star-studded dressing room in check. He referenced iconic figures like Mohamed Barakat, Mohamed Aboutrika and Emad Moteab under the guidance of legendary coach Manuel José.
“When a team has many stars, the coach must have a strong personality. Manuel José managed that generation perfectly—he controlled the team, used each player in his position, and gave every player his value,” Shikabala explained.
He concluded with a damning verdict on the current side, suggesting their lack of identity was evident throughout the match.
“Al Ahly’s character has changed compared to that period. While watching the match, I felt they would not succeed in beating Ceramica Cleopatra.”
