Zamalek’s winning night in Ismailia came with an expensive twist as the Egyptian Football Association handed the club a 100,000 Egyptian pound fine following fan chants during their 2-0 victory over Ceramica Cleopatra.
The punishment came after sections of Zamalek supporters targeted former star Ahmed Mostafa Zizo, now with rivals Al Ahly, along with referee Mahmoud El-Banna. Despite the joy of three points at the Suez Canal Authority Stadium, the post-match mood was overshadowed by the disciplinary blow.
Modern Sport Club also faced sanctions, including 20,000 pounds for hiding balls to waste time against Al Ahly and an additional 50,000 pounds for six yellow cards in the same match.
Questions remain over chants from Al Ahly fans aimed at Modern Sport’s Hossam Hassan, which were not mentioned in the official report. Tharwat Sweilem from the league’s board said any action would depend on the referee and match observer’s notes.
Other penalties included a two-match ban for Pyramids’ Walid El Karti for violent play and a fine for coach Krunoslav Jurčić for protesting decisions.
