Zamalek’s supporters expressed their dissatisfaction with the club’s leadership during Saturday’s match against Berekum Chelsea in the African Champions League’s group stage. Despite being limited to a crowd of only 3,000 people, the Zamalek fans voiced their discontent, directing harsh words at the club’s president, Mamdouh Abbas, and certain members of the board of directors. The frustration stemmed from Zamalek’s performance, resulting in a 1-1 draw against Berekum Chelsea and marking the team’s fourth consecutive defeat. As it stands, Zamalek is positioned at the bottom of Group B in the Champions League, trailing behind Tout Puissant Mazembe, Al Ahly, and Berekum Chelsea.
In the match against the Ghanaians, Mohamed Ibrahim initially provided hope for Zamalek by opening the scoring in the 13th minute. However, a mistake from Burkina Faso’s Abdoulaye Cisse allowed Awudu Nafiu to equalize before the hour mark. Although the supporters remained relatively well-behaved after the match, they expressed their frustration through songs and insults, reflecting their discontent with the club’s recent results.
Notably, this match marked the first time since February that Zamalek played in front of their home crowd. Egyptian stadiums have been closed to spectators since the post-match riots in Port Said last year, which resulted in 74 fatalities and numerous injuries. The government granted Zamalek permission to have 3,000 fans in attendance for this particular match against Berekum Chelsea.
