Zamalek face new crisis over Christian Gross’s unpaid wages
Zamalek’s financial woes have deepened after a new case emerged on FIFA’s website regarding unpaid wages to former Swiss coach Christian Gross.
According to Kooora, Gross filed a claim seeking $600,000 in overdue payments. Gross was hired last December in a bid to restore stability following a difficult spell under Portuguese coach Jose Gomez. Yet, the Swiss coach’s second stint was short-lived due to inconsistent results, leading to his quick dismissal. Under his leadership, Zamalek played 13 matches, winning 9, drawing 3, and losing 2.
FIFA has already imposed a transfer ban on Zamalek for the upcoming window as five additional cases were opened against the club. One new case involves Tunisian star Ferjani Sassi, with the club ordered to pay $480,000 and 5% interest annually for late payments. Issues also remain unresolved with former coach Jose Gomez, pushing the club to pay $160,000 immediately, and claims have surfaced from several foreign players and transfer-related debts.
These mounting cases threaten Zamalek’s ability to reinforce the squad during a crucial period, especially with current roster gaps. To resolve the crisis, the club is urgently seeking funds, warning that delays could lead to further sanctions. Club officials are calling for fast negotiations and greater transparency with fans as they attempt to steer Zamalek through this financial and legal storm.
