Zamalek SC underlined their continental pedigree with a disciplined and efficient display to claim a 1-0 victory over CR Belouizdad in the first leg of their CAF Confederation Cup semi-final clash on Friday night.

Heading into a hostile atmosphere in Algiers, Zamalek named a balanced and experienced squad designed to absorb pressure and strike on the counter.

That tactical clarity paid off midway through the first half when Juan Bezerra capitalised on defensive uncertainty to score what proved to be the decisive goal.

The visitors were initially second best in possession, with Belouizdad dictating tempo and territory in the early exchanges. However, clear openings remained limited, and Zamalek’s compact defensive shape ensured they were never fully exposed.

Zamalek’s threat became evident in transition, with Bezerra going close in the 17th minute before eventually finding the breakthrough in the 28th.

A long delivery caused confusion in the home defence, allowing the forward to react quickest and finish from close range. That moment shifted the rhythm of the contest, forcing Belouizdad to chase the game.

Missed chances cost Belouizdad

Belouizdad responded with urgency but were repeatedly let down by their finishing. The Algerian side struck the woodwork and saw a potential equaliser ruled out following a VAR review for handball, compounding their frustration in front of goal.

Despite enjoying long spells of control, the hosts struggled to break down a resolute Zamalek backline. The Egyptian side maintained their structure and discipline, limiting high-quality chances while remaining alert to counter-attacking opportunities.

Goalkeeper Mahdi Suleiman also played a key role late in the match, producing an important save to preserve the slender advantage. His intervention summed up Zamalek’s defensive commitment on a night where resilience proved just as valuable as attacking quality.

Cairo showdown awaits

The result represents a significant milestone for Zamalek, marking their first victory over Belouizdad and only their second away win on Algerian soil in continental competition. More importantly, it places them in a strong position ahead of the return leg in Cairo.

Still, the tie remains finely poised. A single goal separates the sides, and Belouizdad’s ability to create chances, despite their inefficiency, will offer them encouragement heading into the second leg.

Zamalek will now look to capitalise on home advantage and their experience at this stage of the competition.

Belouizdad, meanwhile, must rediscover their clinical edge if they are to overturn the deficit and keep their final hopes alive when the decisive encounter is played on April 17.
