Zamalek coaching crisis deepens as board and sporting director clash over new manager

Zamalek SC have been plunged into a fresh crisis ahead of the new season, with the identity of the club’s next head coach becoming a major source of disagreement between the board of directors and sporting director John Edward.

The Egyptian giants are currently divided over whether to retain Moataz Gamal as head coach or proceed with the appointment of Serbian tactician Vuk Razovic, with the disagreement adding further uncertainty at a time when the club is already facing significant financial challenges.

According to reports, Zamalek president Hussein Labib and several members of the board are backing Gamal to continue in charge, believing he is the best option given the limited time remaining before the start of the new campaign.

The board reportedly values Gamal’s familiarity with the squad, his understanding of the players’ abilities, and his experience handling the pressure surrounding the club during a difficult period.

Zamalek officials are also believed to have reservations about appointing a foreign coach at this stage, particularly due to concerns over Razovic’s profile and the financial demands involved. The Serbian coach’s salary package, including his technical staff, could cost the club around $90,000 per month.

However, John Edward remains determined to complete the appointment of Razovic, having already reached a preliminary agreement with the Serbian manager.

The sporting director believes Zamalek requires a foreign coach with new ideas and a different approach to help the team compete effectively in the upcoming season.

Despite Edward’s efforts to finalize the deal, the board’s opposition has delayed the official announcement, leaving the club in a state of uncertainty over its technical leadership.

The disagreement has been further complicated by Zamalek’s financial situation, with the board reluctant to commit to additional expenses linked to hiring a foreign coaching staff. This has strengthened the possibility of Gamal remaining in charge.

The unresolved coaching situation has also affected the team’s preparations for the new season. Zamalek have yet to confirm a date for the start of pre-season training or finalize plans for a training camp, despite the league campaign approaching.

Several players have reportedly called for group training sessions to begin as soon as possible, warning that delays could result in insufficient preparation, reduced performance levels, and a greater risk of injuries.

A decisive meeting between the Zamalek board and John Edward is expected in the coming hours, with the club hoping to reach a final agreement on the identity of the head coach.

The outcome will determine whether Moataz Gamal continues at the helm or whether Razovic is officially appointed, allowing the team to finally begin preparations for the new season.
