Zamalek got back to winning ways with a 2-0 away victory over Masry in the final round of Group C in the Egypt Capital Cup on Thursday night.
The White Knights celebrated their first triumph under new coach Moatamed Gamal, ending a poor run of three straight defeats in the competition against Smouha, Al Ittihad, and Zed.
Brazilian forward Juan Bezerra opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 21st minute after a clever run into the box ended with him being brought down by a Masry defender. Deep into stoppage time, substitute Ahmed Sherif sealed the result in the 90+6 minute, calmly finishing a fine pass from teammate Nasser Mansi to double Zamalek’s advantage.
Despite the win, Zamalek’s tally rose only to 7 points, leaving them fifth in the group and officially out of the tournament. Masry, coached by Tunisian Nabil Kouki, remained top with 11 points and secured qualification.
In the same round of fixtures, Arab Contractors boosted their qualification hopes in Group A with a 1-0 win away to holders Ceramica Cleopatra, thanks to a first-half goal from Islam Gaber against a youth-heavy Ceramica side.
Contractors moved up to 11 points, just behind leaders Talaea El Gaish on 13, and now battle Enppi, on 9 points, for progression.
