Zamalek and Pyramids learn African Champions League fate as Egypt face China in handball quarter-final

The draws for the preliminary rounds of the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup will take place in Cairo on Thursday, 6 August 2026, while Egypt’s women’s under-18 handball team face China in the World Championship quarter-finals.

The CAF draw ceremony will be held at the Confederation of African Football’s headquarters in the Egyptian capital.

The Confederation Cup draw is scheduled to begin at 14:00 Egypt time, with the Champions League draw following at 15:00.

Both ceremonies will be broadcast on beIN Sports News, as well as on the Confederation of African Football’s official YouTube channel.

Zamalek, the Egyptian league champions, and Pyramids, who finished runners-up, will represent Egypt in the Champions League.

Al Ahly, who finished third in the league, and Zed, the runners-up in the Egypt Cup, will compete in the Confederation Cup.

Zamalek and Pyramids will enter the Champions League in the first preliminary round.

Al Ahly will begin their Confederation Cup campaign in the round of 32, while Zed will start in the first preliminary round.

The winners of the CAF Champions League will receive a prize of $6m, while the Confederation Cup champions will be awarded $4m.

Clubs eliminated in the preliminary round will receive $100,000.

South African club Mamelodi Sundowns are the holders of the Champions League, while Algeria’s USM Alger are the reigning Confederation Cup champions.

The draw will determine the opening fixtures in both of Africa’s leading club competitions, with Egypt represented by four sides across the two tournaments.

Egypt women’s under-18 team face China

Egypt’s women’s under-18 handball team will play China in the quarter-finals of the World Championship, which is being held in Romania.

The match is due to start at 16:00 Egypt time and will be streamed on the International Handball Federation’s YouTube channel.

Victory would take Egypt into the semi-finals of the competition for the first time in the team’s history.

The quarter-final provides Egypt with the opportunity to reach the last four for the first time, while the result will also decide whether their campaign in Romania continues into the semi-final stage.

The handball fixture and the African club competition draws are the main events involving Egyptian teams on Thursday, with the day beginning with the Confederation Cup ceremony before the Champions League draw and the later quarter-final between Egypt and China.
