Morocco star Zakaria El Ouahdi begins new chapter with Hamburger SV

Morocco international Zakaria El Ouahdi has left KRC Genk after three seasons in Belgium to join Bundesliga side Hamburger SV, the Belgian club announced on Tuesday.

The 24-year-old full-back arrived at Genk in the summer of 2023 and quickly became a popular figure among the club’s supporters.

His performances were marked by his high work rate and attacking ability, qualities that helped him establish himself at the Limburg club.

El Ouahdi’s contribution to Genk extended beyond his statistics. His commitment and determination also made him an important player during his three seasons at the Cegeka Arena.

Last season, he was rewarded with the Ebony Shoe, an award given to the best player of African origin in the Belgian league.

The defender’s progress at club level was matched by his development with Morocco’s national teams.

He helped Morocco win the Africa Cup of Nations Under-23 tournament before being part of the Atlas Lions squad that claimed a bronze medal at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

El Ouahdi subsequently progressed to Morocco’s senior national team and represented the country at the 2026 World Cup, making his appearance at football’s biggest international tournament.

His departure from Genk brings an end to a three-year spell in Belgium, during which he developed both as a player and as an individual.

El Ouahdi acknowledged the importance of the club in his career in a farewell message published by Genk.

“After all these years, the time has come to say goodbye. It’s not easy, because Genk has become much more than just a club for me,” El Ouahdi said in a message published by the Limburg club.

“This is where I got my chance, this is where I grew as a player and as a person, and this is where I experienced unforgettable moments,” he added, thanking his teammates, staff, management and supporters.

The Morocco international also reflected on his commitment to the club during his time in Belgium.

“I gave everything for this jersey and these colors in every match. A new chapter now opens for me, but I leave with immense respect, deep gratitude and wonderful memories,” he continued.

Genk also paid tribute to the departing defender, thanking him for what he contributed during his spell with the club.

KRC Genk thanked El Ouahdi for “his commitment, energy and passion” while playing for the club and wished him “much success at Hamburger SV and for the rest of his career”.

The move to Hamburger SV now gives El Ouahdi the opportunity to continue his career in the Bundesliga after establishing himself in Belgian football.

His three years at Genk included individual recognition with the Ebony Shoe and further milestones with Morocco, including the Under-23 Africa Cup of Nations title, Olympic bronze and his first World Cup appearance.

El Ouahdi leaves Genk with the club recognising his contribution and with the full-back now preparing to begin the next stage of his career in Germany.
