Zakaria Aboukhlal has been called up to Morocco’s national team for the decisive fixtures against Gabon and Lesotho in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers. The Toulouse forward, who has started the season in fine form with his club, was selected by head coach Walid Regragui as a replacement for Villarreal’s Ilias Akhomach, sidelined by a serious knee injury.

Aboukhlal’s inclusion marks a return to the “Atlas Lions” squad after over a year.

The 23-year-old last donned the national team jersey in September 2023 during a friendly against Burkina Faso.

His re-entry into the squad comes as a reward for his consistent performances at the club level, where he continues to develop as an attacking force.

Since making his debut for Morocco, Aboukhlal has accumulated 21 caps and scored three goals.

A former youth international for the Netherlands, the forward opted to represent Morocco at the senior level, adding depth and versatility to the national side’s attacking options.

His international career highlights include appearances in key matches, demonstrating his potential to make an impact on the big stage.

Morocco’s fixtures against Gabon and Lesotho are critical for securing their place in AFCON 2025, set to be held in Côte d’Ivoire.

Regragui’s decision to bring Aboukhlal back into the fold signals confidence in his ability to contribute during these high-stakes matches.

With the Atlas Lions seeking a strong finish to the qualifiers, Aboukhlal’s energy and attacking flair could prove crucial.

The forward’s performances for Toulouse have also been turning heads this season, further cementing his reputation as a reliable player.

His call-up not only reflects his club form but also highlights Regragui’s trust in his ability to deliver on the international stage when it matters most.

As Morocco prepares for their upcoming matches, Aboukhlal will aim to seize the opportunity to reaffirm his value to the team and play a pivotal role in helping the Atlas Lions secure qualification for AFCON 2025.
