Zachariassen gives Ferencvarosi narrow advantage over Salah’s Trabzonspor

Ferencvarosi secured a valuable 1-0 win away to Trabzonspor in the first leg of their UEFA Europa League play-off on Thursday, leaving Mohamed Salah’s Turkish side needing to overturn the deficit in Budapest to reach the league phase.

Christopher Zachariassen scored the only goal of the match at Papara Park, rising to meet a cross and sending a header beyond Andre Onana in the 17th minute. Ferencvarosi defended their lead for the remainder of the contest despite sustained pressure from the hosts after the interval.

Salah had an early opportunity to put Trabzonspor ahead when he broke clear on the right and found himself one-on-one with the visiting goalkeeper. However, his effort was saved, and the home side struggled to produce a convincing display during the opening 45 minutes.

Trabzonspor improved significantly after the break and applied considerable pressure as they looked for an equaliser. Their dominance, though, did not result in a goal, with several chances either blocked or narrowly missed.

The Ferencvarosi defence stopped a close-range header from Salah, before the Egypt international sent another attempt wide of the post. Trabzonspor also came close through Paul Onuachu, whose header struck the crossbar.

The Turkish side finished the game with 10 men after Sibuki Nwajio was shown a straight red card in the first minute of stoppage time. The referee dismissed the Trabzonspor player for a heavy challenge on a Ferencvarosi opponent.

The second leg will take place on 27 August at the Groupama Arena in Budapest, with Trabzonspor required to win if they are to progress to the league phase of the competition.

The match was Salah’s first start for Trabzonspor since joining the club. He made his official debut as a substitute in the opening round of the Turkish league season, when Trabzonspor drew 1-1 with Kasımpasa.

The Egypt forward moved to Trabzonspor as a free agent this summer after spending nine seasons with Liverpool. His arrival had raised expectations around the club, but he was unable to prevent Ferencvarosi from taking control of the tie in the first meeting.

Trabzonspor earned their opportunity to compete for a place in the Europa League after finishing third in the Turkish league last season and winning the Turkish Cup. That combination of results secured their place in the qualifying route, with the outcome now to be decided in the return fixture in Hungary.

The club’s next task will be to find a way through a well-organised Ferencvarosi defence while also managing the disadvantage of playing the second leg away from home.
