Youssouf Mulumbu predicts fiery Senegal–DR Congo showdown at AFCON 2025

Former DR Congo captain Youssouf Mulumbu has stoked anticipation ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, declaring that the Leopards are ready to challenge Senegal in what promises to be one of the tournament’s standout fixtures.

A decade after guiding DR Congo to a bronze medal at the 2015 AFCON, the ex-Paris Saint-Germain, West Bromwich Albion, and Celtic midfielder remains one of the most respected voices in African football.

Speaking to CAFOnline.com, Mulumbu offered a measured yet passionate perspective on the evolution of his national team and its upcoming encounter with the reigning African champions in Group D.

“We have a score to settle with the Lions of Teranga, but we’ll do it in a good spirit. Congratulations to Senegal on qualifying for the World Cup; it’s well deserved. This match will have symbolic value for us. We were evenly matched with them during the qualifiers,” Mulumbu said.

Senegal, who eliminated the Leopards during the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, will once again stand between DR Congo and continental glory, alongside group opponents Benin and Botswana.

For Mulumbu, however, the balance of power may be shifting.

“I wouldn’t say our generation was better, but it relied more on individual talent, he explained. The current team is more cohesive, more united. You can see it defensively: they concede few goals. And up front, a fit Bakambu remains a real threat.”

Mulumbu, who captained DR Congo through several key international campaigns, believes the difference between success and failure lies not in tactics but in mentality.

“Mental strength is key, he insisted. We have to convince ourselves that we’re on par with the top African nations and that we can aim for the title. The quarter-final exit at the last AFCON left its mark, but coach Sébastien Desabre has done a remarkable job. The team has regained stability, cohesion, and a real desire to redeem itself.”

The 37-year-old sees Morocco 2025 as a defining moment for this generation of Congolese footballers.

“Tactically and offensively, the DRC has strong arguments, he said. Now, they need to strengthen their collective mentality. This competition in Morocco could be the one where this generation confirms its potential.”

With Senegal aiming to defend its title and DR Congo eager to restore its status among Africa’s elite, Mulumbu’s words capture the spirit of determination that could define Group D.

For the Leopards, this AFCON may not just be about redemption — it could be about reawakening a nation’s footballing pride.
