Youssouf Fofana explains Sevilla move after Lyon transfer

Youssouf Fofana has explained why he joined Sevilla on loan from AC Milan instead of completing a late move to Lyon.

The French midfielder had been close to joining the Ligue 1 club, but the deal collapsed after Lyon failed to create enough room in their wage budget.

The proposed transfer depended partly on Nicolas Tagliafico’s expected move to Atlético Madrid. When that departure fell through, Lyon could no longer make the financial space needed to sign Fofana before the deadline.

Sevilla’s interest arrived late, yet the club’s determination quickly changed the midfielder’s plans. “When I received the first contact from Sevilla, in the presence of my agents, everything happened very quickly,” Fofana explained. He added: “I always give priority to people who want me in their team and within their organisation.”

The 27-year-old had spent two seasons with Milan, making 88 appearances, but his future at San Siro had become uncertain. His first appearance for Sevilla came against Espanyol in a 1-1 draw.

Fofana insists he has no regrets. “There were rumours and many teams were talking about me, but in life, everything God does and decides is good and positive. I am sincerely very happy this opportunity came. Given my situation, it was perfect. I could not have dreamed of anything better,” he said.
