Youssef En-Nesyri became the focus of criticism after refusing to celebrate his goal for Al-Ittihad against Al-Hilal and instead going straight to embrace opposing goalkeeper Yassine Bounou.
The incident took place during the eighth-round Saudi Pro League classic, which Al-Ittihad eventually lost 3-2. En-Nesyri scored his side’s only goal at that stage of the match in the 22nd minute, surprising Bounou with a powerful strike before walking over to console and embrace his Morocco team-mate.
The gesture highlighted the close friendship between the two players, but it also prompted a divided reaction. Some supporters viewed the embrace as a respectful and human response between friends, while others felt it was out of keeping with the intensity of a major contest between two rivals.
For some fans, En-Nesyri should have shown greater enthusiasm for Al-Ittihad after scoring an important goal in such a high-profile fixture. They argued that his responsibility was to his club and its supporters, particularly as Al-Ittihad are competing for major honours.
Criticism of En-Nesyri
Saudi sports journalist and football critic Abdullah Falatah was among those to question the striker’s decision. He said En-Nesyri’s friendship with Bounou did not justify failing to celebrate after scoring in a match of this importance.
“If you, En-Nesyri, were a player for Al-Hilal, I would understand you not celebrating, because that is part of football etiquette,” Falatah said.
“But not celebrating because of Bounou, and then going to console him over a goal you scored? No, I’m sorry, that is wrong and unacceptable in football.”
The criticism has opened a wider debate about how far personal relationships should influence players during major matches. One view is that respect between team-mates and friends can coexist with professionalism. Another is that the club shirt and the supporters must always come first, with players expected to fight for their team until the final whistle.
Friendship behind the gesture
From another perspective, En-Nesyri’s reaction was understandable given his relationship with Bounou. His decision not to celebrate did not necessarily mean he was underestimating the goal or lacked commitment to helping Al-Ittihad. It could instead be seen as a personal gesture towards a close friend and fellow Morocco international.
However, the sensitivity surrounding the Al-Ittihad-Al-Hilal rivalry meant that the moment was interpreted beyond the player’s likely intention. The embrace quickly became one of the most discussed scenes of the match, overshadowing the goal itself.
The debate remains divided between those who regard En-Nesyri’s conduct as an example of sportsmanship and those who believe he crossed a line by not celebrating against a direct rival.
