Youssef Boulifi, the highly regarded teenage midfielder on the books of Torino FC, has opted to represent Tunisia at international level, despite previously featuring for Italy at youth level.
Born in 2009 and currently plying his trade in the youth ranks of Torino, Boulifi has confirmed his commitment to the Tunisian national team by accepting a call-up to the country’s Under-16 squad.
His decision marks a pivotal point in his international career, having earlier represented Italy in the same age group.
The 15-year-old’s footballing education began at Juventus, where he was developed until the age of 14 before making the switch to cross-town rivals Torino.
His technical ability and flair in attacking midfield positions have drawn attention from coaches in both Italy and Tunisia, but it is the latter with whom he will now pursue his international ambitions.
Boulifi will feature for Tunisia in an upcoming U16 international tournament in Switzerland, scheduled to take place from 16 to 23 May.
He joins a squad that includes 11 other players based abroad, highlighting Tunisia’s strategy of incorporating diaspora talent into its youth development system.
The Tunisian Football Federation (FTF) has recently intensified efforts to scout and integrate young dual-nationality players, with Boulifi’s inclusion seen as a significant success in that strategy.
While his switch does not preclude a future change in senior national team allegiance under current FIFA eligibility rules, his selection for this youth tournament marks a strong commitment to the North African nation.
A spokesperson for the Tunisian youth setup hailed Boulifi’s decision, noting the potential long-term value he could bring to the national team’s pipeline: “Youssef is a very intelligent and technically gifted player. His presence adds quality to our midfield and shows our commitment to bringing in the best talents, wherever they may be.”
As Tunisia continues to build its future squads around a blend of local and overseas-based players, Boulifi’s move could serve as inspiration for other young footballers with Tunisian heritage navigating dual identities on the international stage.
For now, all eyes will be on his performances in Switzerland as he dons the red and white for the first time.
