DR Congo’s Pride: Youri Tielemans Named “Newcomer of the Year” for Second Time
DR Congo continues to shine through its diaspora. After Neeskens Kebano won the prestigious Ebony Shoe, another player of Congolese origin, Youri Tielemans, has been honored in Belgian football. The 18-year-old Anderlecht midfielder was named “Newcomer of the Year” for the second year in a row, an award voted by 360 players of Division 1.
Tielemans secured 874 points, outpacing Nigeria’s Moses Simon (Ghent, 742 points) and Guinea’s Obbi Oulare (Club Brugge, 622 points).
“This is the second time and like last year, I’m very happy to win this award,” said Tielemans. “I had a bit of a lull during the season but I’m coming back strong. Being elected by my peers makes it even more special.”
Tielemans, who signed a five-year contract extension with Anderlecht on his 18th birthday (May 7), joined the club’s youth system at age five and made his first-team debut in 2013. Today, he is a cornerstone of the squad and a fan favorite at Les Mauves.
Despite attracting attention from major European clubs, Tielemans remains grounded:
“I just turned 18. I need to continue maturing. When the time comes to move abroad, I want to be fully ready. For now, I feel at home at Anderlecht.”
Tielemans also dreams of joining the Belgian national team, saying:
“The Red Devils have a very strong squad. It’s a dream for every footballer. I hope to reach that level one day.”
With humility, maturity, and incredible talent, Youri Tielemans represents both Belgium’s future and a source of pride for the Congolese community.
