YOUNOUSSE SANKHARÉ COMMITS TO SENEGAL: “PLAYING FOR MY COUNTRY WOULD BE AN HONOR”
Younousse Sankharé has officially declared his desire to represent Senegal at international level. The Guingamp midfielder, who previously played for France’s U21 team, is now eager to don the jersey of the Lions of Teranga, his parents’ country of origin.
“I am available to play for Senegal if I am selected. Both my parents are Senegalese, so playing for Senegal would really be an honor for me,” Sankharé told the BBC.
Though also of Mauritanian descent, Sankharé clarified that he has never been contacted by the Mauritanian federation. His focus is now firmly on earning a place in Alain Giresse’s squad for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations.
The 25-year-old is under no illusions about the challenge ahead:
“When you look at the players available for Senegal, then you know that the work will be immense to earn a chance to play for the country. The motivation is enormous. Seeing the passion and desire of the players to excel inspired me to want to do the same.”
With stiff competition in Senegal’s midfield, Sankharé faces a difficult task, but his commitment and drive may soon earn him a place among Africa’s elite.
