Algerian football star Youcef Belaïli, currently under consideration for the upcoming African Cup of Nations (AFCON), has shared his insights on the tournament, expressing optimism about Algeria’s chances while addressing concerns about the playing conditions that impacted their performance in the last CAN.
Belaïli, boasting 49 caps and 9 goals for the Algerian national team, remains uncertain about his participation in the AFCON but finds himself included in the expanded list by coach Djamel Belmadi.
Amidst uncertainties surrounding his selection, the forward, known as “mister one goal per match,” has maintained stellar form, notching 10 goals in 10 matches this season with MC Algiers.
In an interview with CAFOnline.com, Belaïli touched upon the recent challenges faced by Algerian football, including his personal setback—a fine of 100,000 DA (approximately 677 euros) following protests against refereeing decisions in a match against USM Khenchela.
His potential participation in the AFCON hinges on developments in the Algerian championship, currently on hiatus after the tragic accident involving MC El Bayadh, resulting in the loss of two team members.
The footballer acknowledges the gravity of the situation, and with the championship at a standstill, he awaits the decision ahead of the AFCON.
Reflecting on the upcoming tournament, Belaïli expects a high level of competition, emphasizing the physical nature of play among most teams.
Confident in Algeria’s current form, he states, “We have an excellent team, and we will go to Ivory Coast to achieve a good result and why not win the African Cup of Nations.
” Despite the uncertainties, Belaïli’s determination underscores Algeria’s ambitions in the continental competition.
As Algeria awaits the finalization of its AFCON squad, football enthusiasts eagerly anticipate the nation’s performance on the Ivory Coast’s football stage.
