Youcef Belaïli Set to Extend Stay at Espérance

Espérance Sportive de Tunis have moved to secure the future of Algerian international Youcef Belaïli after reaching an agreement in principle to extend his contract by a further two seasons.

The Tunisian club confirmed that discussions between club president Hamdi Meddeb, vice-president Chokri Ouaer and the player have resulted in a mutual understanding over a two-year extension.

The agreement is subject to the resolution of Belaïli’s ongoing case before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne.

In an official statement, the club outlined that the extension will be activated once the legal situation is clarified, signalling a shared intention from both parties to continue their collaboration beyond the current terms.

The development follows earlier indications from the club’s hierarchy, with vice-president Chokri Ouaer recently revealing that direct talks had taken place with the player. At the time, he noted that Belaïli had expressed a desire to continue his spell with Espérance.

For the Tunisian champions, retaining key figures within the squad has been identified as a central objective. The club’s leadership has repeatedly stressed the importance of maintaining continuity and stability as they prepare for upcoming sporting challenges.

Belaïli’s situation has been shaped by a contrasting period in his career. The winger enjoyed a strong 2024–2025 campaign, playing an influential role in Espérance’s performances and contributing significantly in key matches.

However, his momentum was disrupted in November when he suffered a ligament injury that ruled him out for the remainder of the season, halting what had been a productive spell on the pitch.

Despite the setback, the club’s confidence in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations winner remains unchanged. Espérance continue to value his experience, technical ability and influence within the squad, viewing him as an important figure once fully fit.

The planned contract extension reflects that trust, with the club expecting Belaïli to return to full fitness and resume his role as a key attacking option once he recovers.

With the agreement in principle now in place, Espérance are positioning themselves to retain one of their most experienced players as they look ahead to future domestic and continental ambitions.
