The Algerian national team has finalized its preparations for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, drawn in Group C alongside Kenya, Senegal, and Tanzania. The Fennecs will open their campaign against Kenya on June 23rd, followed by matches against Senegal on June 27th and Tanzania on July 1st. Algeria is determined to make a strong impact in Egypt, where the tournament is closely followed by passionate supporters at home.

“We all know the importance of the Africa Cup of Nations for Algerians, who follow it with great interest. It is with this in mind that we will go to Egypt to put on a good show and go as far as possible. This time, we are not the favorites for AFCON 2019, which means we have less pressure on our shoulders, which is a good thing in my opinion. In any case, we will do everything to honor the colors of Algeria,” said Youcef Atal in an interview with Bein Sport.

Algeria’s preparation program is divided into two phases. The first phase began on June 3rd at the National Technical Center in Sidi-Moussa (Algiers) and will continue until June 8th, when the squad departs for Doha, Qatar via a special Air Algérie flight. During the second phase, coach Djamel Belmadi’s team will play two friendly matches to finalize tactical plans and assess player form. They will face Burundi on June 11 and Mali on June 16 in Doha.

Following the completion of their training and friendlies in Qatar, the squad, including key stars such as Riyad Mahrez, will fly to Cairo on June 18th, ready to compete in the continent’s premier tournament. The combination of local and Europe-based players gives Algeria a strong and balanced squad capable of competing at a high level.

Although Algeria is not considered one of the pre-tournament favorites, the Fennecs see this as an advantage, allowing them to play with less pressure while aiming for a deep run. Coach Djamel Belmadi has emphasized discipline, cohesion, and adaptability as key factors for success in the group stage and beyond.

With meticulous preparation, including the two training camps and friendlies, Algeria aims to start strongly against Kenya and build momentum through the group stage. The team’s mix of experienced internationals and emerging talents is designed to give them tactical flexibility and a competitive edge in a challenging AFCON 2019.

The Fennecs’ methodical approach reflects the importance of careful planning and squad readiness ahead of one of Africa’s most prestigious football tournaments. Fans across Algeria and the continent will be watching closely, eager to see how Mahrez and his teammates perform in Egypt, and whether they can challenge for the title in what promises to be a highly competitive edition of the Africa Cup of Nations.
