Algerian international Youcef Atal opened his goal-scoring account for Al-Sadd, helping his side secure a 3-1 victory over Al-Wasl in the second leg of the Asian Champions League round of 16.
The result ensures Al-Sadd’s place in the quarter-finals of the competition.
The match began unfavorably for the Qatari side, with Fábio Lima giving Al-Wasl an early lead in the 10th minute.
However, Félix Sánchez’s men responded in dominant fashion, scoring three times before halftime to turn the game in their favor.
Atal’s moment of brilliance
Al-Sadd equalized in the 26th minute through Moustafa Tarek, before Atal delivered a moment of individual brilliance just four minutes later.
Positioned on the right flank, the Algerian full-back showcased his skill by dribbling past Colombian defender Alexis Perez before unleashing a deceptive strike.
Anticipating a cross, the Al-Wasl goalkeeper moved off his line, only to be caught off guard as Atal expertly placed his shot into the net from a tight angle.
Al-Sadd continued their momentum, with Akram Afif adding a third goal in the 37th minute, effectively sealing the match before the break.
A rewarding return to form
Since joining Al-Sadd in September 2024, Atal has experienced a challenging adaptation period.
Initially left out of the club’s domestic league squad for the first half of the season, he has been primarily limited to appearances in the Asian Champions League.
Despite this, his performances have steadily improved, contributing three assists before finally finding the net against Al-Wasl.
This goal marks a crucial milestone in Atal’s return to form, especially ahead of his expected call-up to the Algerian national team.
With the Greens’ training camp set to begin on March 17, Atal is likely to be included in Vladimir Petković’s squad for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations 2025 qualifiers against Botswana and Mozambique.
A vital asset for Algeria
Atal’s resurgence comes at an opportune moment for Algeria, who are looking to strengthen their squad after a disappointing AFCON 2023 campaign.
His ability to contribute both defensively and offensively makes him a valuable asset, and his latest performances will undoubtedly boost his confidence heading into international duty.
With Al-Sadd progressing to the quarter-finals and Atal rediscovering his best form, the Algerian full-back appears set for an important role both at club level and with the national team in the coming months.
