The verdict came down on Wednesday, dealing a blow to Fenerbahce’s hopes in European competitions. Already eliminated from the Champions League by Arsenal and relegated to the Europa League, Fenerbahce will now not be able to participate in the second UEFA competition either.
The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) rejected Fenerbahce’s appeal against the sanction imposed by UEFA on July 15, 2013. This means that players like Cameroonian Pierre Webo, Senegalese Moussa Sow, and Nigerians Joseph Yobo and Emmanuel Emenike will be ineligible to play in European competitions for the current and upcoming seasons. Fenerbahce faced sanctions due to its involvement in match-fixing cases in Turkey.
This decision is likely to stir up speculation about the potential departure of certain players, including Moussa Sow, as the club faces restrictions on participating in European tournaments. It’s worth noting that Metallist Kharkhiv also faced exclusion from the Champions League this season for similar match-fixing allegations.
