Yaya Touré loses patience after Slovan Bratislava suffer another Champions League defeat
Yaya Touré has voiced his frustration with Slovan Bratislava’s performances in the Champions League after his side suffered a 4-0 defeat by Roma, leaving the Slovakian champions without a win after three matches in the competition.
The former Ivory Coast captain admitted his team must improve their concentration, unity and fighting spirit after another difficult night in Europe.
Slovan have now conceded 13 goals and scored just once in their opening three matches, having also lost 6-1 to Paris Saint-Germain and 3-0 to Stuttgart.
Touré, who took charge of Slovan Bratislava four months ago in his first head coaching role, is facing the challenge of competing against some of Europe’s strongest clubs. Tuesday’s defeat at the Olympic Stadium in Rome provided another reminder of the gap his team must overcome.
Defensive mistakes cost Slovan
Slovan’s problems were particularly evident during Roma’s third goal, when captain Tigran Barseghyan failed to clear the ball inside his own penalty area.
The Armenian midfielder hesitated despite having opportunities to deal with the danger, allowing Niccolò Pisilli to take advantage and score from close range.
Touré reacted by substituting Barseghyan just three minutes after the goal, visibly frustrated by the costly mistake.
Roma added a fourth when Wesley got the better of César Blackman, who conceded a penalty. Donyell Malen converted from the spot to complete the scoring and leave Slovan facing another heavy defeat.
The visitors struggled to threaten throughout the match and failed to register a single shot on target, underlining their difficulties against the Italian side.
Speaking after the game, Touré criticised his players’ approach and stressed the importance of greater discipline.
“We were passive. At this level, those kinds of mistakes are very costly,” he said.
The Ivorian coach also questioned the team’s togetherness and ability to maintain concentration throughout a match.
“We’re not united. We don’t stay focused for 90 minutes. We need to fight and support each other more.”
Touré calls for patience
Touré’s frustration became more apparent when he was asked how he intended to motivate his players following another disappointing European performance.
The former Manchester City midfielder made his feelings clear while explaining the limits of what he could do to force a reaction from his squad.
“I can’t grab them, shake them, hit them or kick them.”
Despite his anger, Touré appealed for patience as he continues to establish himself in management. He has been in charge for only four months and acknowledged that Slovan face opponents with significantly greater resources.
The former Ivory Coast international has spent time preparing for a coaching career, managing several clubs and national teams before taking up the position at Slovan Bratislava.
He believes his team needs time to develop and close the gap on Europe’s leading sides.
“Give me time and you’ll see,” he said, while admitting the difference between Slovan and Roma was “enormous.”
LASK test offers chance to respond
Slovan were not expected to compete immediately with the likes of Paris Saint-Germain and Roma, but their defensive weaknesses are becoming an increasing concern.
Conceding 13 goals in three matches has left Touré with significant work to do as he attempts to improve the team’s performances without losing the confidence of his players.
The coach must now find a way to turn the defeats into valuable lessons and ensure his squad responds to his demands for greater commitment and discipline.
Slovan’s next European fixture is scheduled for 3 November against LASK, an opponent they will hope to handle more effectively.
That match could provide an important indication of whether Touré’s message has reached his players and whether the Slovakian side can begin to make progress in the competition.
