Multiple-time African Footballer of the Year Yaya Touré has praised Lille striker Nicolas Pépé, highlighting his impressive performances and potential to win the African Player of the Year in the future. Speaking to RFI, Touré expressed confidence in Pépé’s abilities, noting that his talent and recent season make him a strong contender for the prestigious award one day.
“He is still young and has several years ahead of him. It wouldn’t surprise me if he were to win the African Ballon d’Or one day,” Touré said. He emphasized that Pépé must maintain a winning mentality and continue working hard to reach the top. “With the superb season he’s had, he’ll definitely be closely watched by other players and highly anticipated by the press next season. He has to push himself to the limit. That’s the price you pay when you want to be the best,” added the former Ivory Coast midfielder.
Touré also stressed the importance of consistency, noting that to earn the reputation of a great player, Pépé must repeat top-level performances over multiple seasons. The 24-year-old Ivorian concluded the campaign with 22 goals and 13 assists, cementing his status as one of Europe’s most exciting young talents.
With Touré continuing his career in China, his words carry weight as advice and recognition for Pépé, who is expected to attract attention from bigger European clubs during the upcoming transfer window.
