Yassir Zabiri: Morocco forward embraces first senior team opportunity

Morocco forward Yassir Zabiri says receiving his first call-up to the senior national team has been a major moment in his career.

The 21-year-old was included in Mohamed Ouahbi’s 29-man squad for Morocco’s opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches after making an impression during his loan spell at Spanish side Racing Santander.

Zabiri says the confidence he gained after moving to Spain helped him adapt quickly and make an impact at his new club.

“It is a great emotion. Being part of a team that gives you confidence and pushes you to improve is what happened to me in Spain. I quickly adapted to the team and gave my best. I thank them,” Zabiri said.

Zabiri adapting to Morocco senior set-up

The forward has enjoyed a strong start to his time at Racing Santander, where he is on loan from French club Rennes.

His performances have earned him a place in Morocco’s senior set-up as he prepares for his first experience of international football at senior level.

Zabiri says the presence of familiar faces in the Morocco squad has also helped him settle into the team.

“When you come to the national team, you don’t feel small. The older players help you adapt quickly,” the player said.

The forward added that the environment within the Atlas Lions squad has made the transition easier.

“I know many players in the national team. They help us adapt. We have everything we need here,” Zabiri said.

He also thanked Morocco supporters for their backing through both good and difficult moments.

Morocco begin AFCON 2027 qualifying campaign

Zabiri could make his senior international debut when Morocco begin their 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign.

The Atlas Lions will host Gabon on September 25 at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat before travelling to Bloemfontein, South Africa, to face Lesotho four days later.

Morocco will then face Ghana in a friendly in Tangier on October 4.

The fixtures represent a new chapter for Zabiri after his breakthrough at youth international level and move to Spanish football.
