Yassine Gessime shines as Strasbourg secure first Ligue 1 victory

Yassine Gessime scored both goals as Strasbourg came from behind to beat Lens 2-1 at Stade de la Meinau on Saturday and record their first Ligue 1 win of the season.

The Moroccan attacker was the decisive figure in an entertaining contest, producing a standout performance on the right side before completing Strasbourg’s comeback six minutes from time.

Lens had taken the lead shortly before half-time after Sima was fouled inside the penalty area. Florian Thauvin made no mistake from the spot in the 37th minute, sending the visitors into the interval with a 1-0 advantage.

Strasbourg had started positively but found themselves facing a deficit. Gessime ensured that did not last long after the restart, restoring parity only three minutes into the second half.

The 20-year-old finished a well-constructed team move with a precise right-footed shot to bring Strasbourg level and give the home side renewed momentum.

Gessime continued to pose a threat after scoring, using his movement to create openings and remain heavily involved in Strasbourg’s attacking play. He was also part of the move that appeared to produce a third goal in the 55th minute, when Jacopo Ortega found the net.

However, the goal was ruled out by the video assistant referee for offside, leaving the match finely balanced as Strasbourg continued to press for a winner.

That winner arrived in the 84th minute, with Gessime once again at the centre of the decisive moment. He completed another collective attack with a successful finish, scoring his second goal of the afternoon and putting Strasbourg ahead for the first time.

Lens attempted to respond during the closing stages, but Strasbourg held on to protect their lead. The result secured three points for the home team and gave them an ideal start to their Ligue 1 campaign after turning a first-half setback into a valuable victory.

Gessime’s display made him the clear standout performer, as his two goals not only changed the course of the match but also ensured Strasbourg began their league campaign with a memorable comeback.
