Yassine Bounou reveals how he came close of joining Bayern Munich before Al Hilal move

Morocco international Yassine Bounou has revealed that he nearly joined Bayern Munich, but delays from the German club led him to accept a move to Saudi Arabia’s Al Hilal instead.

In an interview on the “EZZEQUIEL” YouTube channel, the goalkeeper described how Bayern’s hesitation ultimately altered the trajectory of his career.

“I was close to playing for Bayern Munich when I was on my way out of Sevilla,” Bono said. “I really thought it would happen, but they procrastinated a lot, and I had to make a decision.”

The comments shed light on his departure from Sevilla FC in August 2023, ending a successful four-year stint in Spain where he lifted Europa League trophies and established himself as one of the world’s top goalkeepers.

Although a move to Germany seemed imminent, Bounou opted for Al Hilal, reportedly for around €20 million, joining a wave of high-profile signings in the Saudi Pro League. He credited the club’s decisiveness as a key factor in his choice, contrasting it with Bayern’s slow negotiations.

“Then Al Hilal’s offer came. Honestly, I don’t regret it because they take good care of me here,” he said.

Since his arrival, Bounou has become a pillar of Al Hilal’s squad, under contract until 2028, contributing significantly to both domestic and continental ambitions. His decision reflects the growing strength of the Saudi Pro League, which has attracted global talent and invested heavily to compete with Europe’s elite.

Despite suffering injury setbacks earlier in 2026, Bounou remains one of the most respected goalkeepers in the game, playing a central role for both Al Hilal and the Moroccan national team. His performances helped Morocco reach the AFCON final, reinforcing his status as one of Africa’s premier players.

Ultimately, Bayern Munich’s hesitation opened the door for Bounou to secure stability and remain at the top level, thriving in a league rapidly rising in global prominence.
