Yassine Bounou injury raises Morocco concerns after Al-Hilal setback

Yassine Bounou suffered an injury during the warm-up before Al-Hilal’s Saudi Pro League match against Neom, creating uncertainty over his availability for Morocco’s upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.

The Morocco goalkeeper had been named in Al-Hilal’s starting line-up for Monday’s match but did not take his place on the pitch. He felt discomfort before kick-off, returned to the dressing room early and was replaced at the last moment by Mohammed Al-Owais.

Al-Hilal have not yet provided a detailed diagnosis or indicated how long Bounou might be unavailable. Several Moroccan and Saudi Arabian media outlets have reported that the 35-year-old experienced pain at the back of his thigh, potentially involving his hamstring.

Further medical examinations are expected to establish the precise nature of the problem. Until those results are released, it remains unclear whether Bounou was withdrawn as a precaution or has suffered a more significant muscular injury.

The timing is particularly unfortunate for the goalkeeper, who had made an impressive start to the season. Bounou remains a key figure for Simone Inzaghi’s side and had produced several strong performances in the opening weeks of the campaign.

He had also kept three clean sheets in the four league matches before Al-Hilal welcomed Neom. Without him, the Saudi club suffered their first defeat of the season, losing 2-0.

Bounou’s importance to Morocco is similarly well established. He was again among the Atlas Lions’ outstanding performers at the 2026 World Cup, meaning any absence would represent a major concern for head coach Mohamed Ouahbi.

Ouahbi is due to announce his squad shortly for Morocco’s opening two matches in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. Morocco will host Gabon in Rabat on 25 September before travelling to South Africa to face Lesotho four days later.

There is still more than two weeks for Bounou to recover before the first of those fixtures. His involvement, however, will depend on the findings of the medical tests and the severity of the injury.

If he is ruled out, Munir Mohamedi would be the most experienced alternative available to Morocco, although his lack of regular club football will be monitored. El Mehdi Benabid could also move up the goalkeeping hierarchy.

The question of who will eventually succeed Bounou, and which other goalkeepers can challenge for a place in the Morocco squad, has been raised regularly. For now, there is no official indication that the injury is serious, and an alarming outcome cannot be assumed.

Nevertheless, the incident has come at an awkward moment for the Atlas Lions, with the team preparing for the first international gathering of a new cycle and important qualifying matches already approaching.
