Yanis Merdji, one of Girondins de Bordeaux’s standout summer signings, has shared the story behind his decision to join the club during a challenging period of rebuilding. The 31-year-old forward, who transferred from US Concarneau, has quickly captured the admiration of Bordeaux fans with his strong start to the season.
In an interview with Ouest-France, Merdji spoke candidly about his motivations for making the move and his aspirations for the club’s future.
“John Williams, the sporting director, contacted me and presented the project. Obviously, when you get called by the Girondins, it’s fabulous, despite everything that happened this summer,” Merdji explained.
“The situation was special, so it wasn’t an easy choice, but today, I don’t regret it. It confirms my choice that this project can be extremely fulfilling as an athlete.”
The Franco-Algerian striker acknowledged that the decision to join Bordeaux wasn’t without its challenges, given the club’s recent turbulence.
However, he viewed it as an opportunity to be part of something meaningful.
“Writing a New Chapter”
Merdji also revealed the personal significance of helping Bordeaux regain its former glory.
“Historically, a new page has to be written. When you are a player and you love football, participating in the Girondins’ comeback, for me, is important,” he said.
“The level is not Ligue 2, that’s for sure, but you have to know how to make concessions. It is for this history and this ultra-interesting sporting project that I chose to join Bordeaux.”
Since arriving, Merdji has made an immediate impact, scoring four goals in nine appearances across all competitions.
His contributions have reinforced optimism among Bordeaux supporters about the club’s direction under the new project.
A Career Built on Determination
The journey to Bordeaux marks another chapter in Merdji’s well-traveled career.
Before his move, the forward honed his skills at several clubs, including FC Limonest, Bourg-en-Bresse, AJ Auxerre, Le Mans FC, Chamois Niort, Châteauroux, and most recently, US Concarneau.
Despite the challenges, Merdji remains focused on his mission: to play a central role in Bordeaux’s resurgence.
With his eyes set firmly on the future, he is determined to help the club restore its place among French football’s elite.
For Bordeaux fans, Merdji’s commitment and early performances symbolize hope for a brighter era as the Girondins look to rebuild their legacy.
