Yanis Begraoui eyes Morocco senior call-up after coach’s visit
Moroccan forward Yanis Begraoui has set his sights on a place in the senior national team after catching the attention of Morocco’s coaching staff during a recent league outing for Estoril Praia.
The 23-year-old striker, currently enjoying a strong run of form in Portugal, received a notable boost when national team coach Mohamed Ouahbi attended Estoril’s match against FC Porto.
The visit is seen as a clear indication that Begraoui’s performances are being closely monitored as he pushes for a senior call-up.
Speaking to 360sport, the former Morocco U23 international welcomed the attention, describing it as a motivating factor in his development.
“The fact that Mohamed Ouahbi came to see me play against FC Porto is definitely a positive thing,” he said with humility but determination. “Knowing that you’re being followed is even more motivating and shows that I’m on the right track.”
The recognition arrives at a crucial stage in Begraoui’s career as he looks to transition from youth success to senior prominence.
Competition for places in Morocco’s attack remains intense, but the forward believes consistency and continued improvement will strengthen his case.
Begraoui was part of the Morocco side that lifted the U23 Africa Cup of Nations, a milestone that underlined his potential at international level. However, the striker is eager to build on that success and replicate it with the senior squad.
“ If I maintain this level and remain decisive, there’s no reason why my time shouldn’t come, ” he explains.
For him, the key lies on the pitch: “ It’s up to me to do what’s necessary on the field, and the first call-up will come, God willing. ”
Ouahbi’s decision to assess Begraoui against top-tier opposition such as FC Porto highlights the importance placed on evaluating players in demanding environments.
The striker’s adaptability and eye for goal are viewed as strengths that could add depth to Morocco’s attacking options.
With major international competitions on the horizon, Begraoui’s progress is likely to remain under close observation as he continues his push for a place among the Atlas Lions’ senior ranks.
