Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, currently unwanted at Newcastle United after struggling to make an impact, is being linked with a return to Ligue 1—and the race for his signature is heating up.
According to L’Équipe, newly promoted RC Lens, backed by ambitious Azeri investor Hafiz Mammadov, are hoping to make a statement signing by bringing Yanga-Mbiwa on loan with an option to buy. Mammadov, who played a major role in Lens’ promotion, is reportedly eager to strengthen the squad with high-profile reinforcements as the club prepares for life back in the top flight.
However, Lens faces stiff competition from Olympique de Marseille, who are also interested in the former Montpellier captain. Marseille is reportedly prepared to offer €6 million to Newcastle for a permanent transfer—an offer that could sway the English club, who may prefer a direct sale.
Yanga-Mbiwa, who rose to prominence with Montpellier during their 2011–12 Ligue 1 title win, has seen his career stall since moving abroad. A return to France, especially to a club offering regular playing time, could be key to reviving his form.
