Yan Diomande’s remarkable rise: From MLS rejection to Real Madrid’s Champions League stage

Yan Diomande’s extraordinary rise could reach another landmark tonight when the Ivorian teenager lines up for Real Madrid against Inter Milan in the UEFA Champions League.

Just weeks after completing a club-record $145 million transfer from RB Leipzig, the 19-year-old is in contention to make his first appearance in Europe’s elite club competition as 15-time champions Madrid begin their 2026/27 campaign at the Santiago Bernabéu.

For Diomande, the occasion would represent another remarkable step in a career that only began to accelerate after several clubs passed on the opportunity to sign him.

The winger is yet to start for Madrid. He has made four LaLiga appearances, all from the bench, including just over 25 minutes in Friday’s 1-0 defeat to Real Betis.

However, a string of absences could change that against Inter.

Mourinho faces midfield problems

Madrid will be without Arda Güler, Bernardo Silva and Eduardo Camavinga, who are suspended, while Aurélien Tchouaméni remains a doubt as he completes his recovery from injury.

José Mourinho could therefore move Jude Bellingham into a deeper midfield role alongside captain Federico Valverde, with Brahim Díaz potentially taking the No. 10 position.

That scenario could create an opening on the right flank for Diomande to make his first Madrid start — and his Champions League debut.

Mourinho, however, has urged patience with the teenager and insists his huge price tag should not dictate how quickly he is introduced.

“Relax, he has to go little by little,” the Portuguese said after Madrid’s 4-0 league victory over Málaga on August 30. “He’s working really hard. He’s an open, humble kid who wants to learn, who wants to work. He listens to me, and he also listens to his teammates. He is going to grow.”

Mourinho added: “I can’t look at [Diomande’s nine-figure price tag]. I have to look at the young player with enormous potential who had a high-level season in the Bundesliga with Leipzig.”

Africa’s latest football success story

Diomande arrives in Madrid after an impressive breakthrough campaign at Leipzig, where he recorded 23 goal involvements in 36 appearances and helped the German side finish third in the Bundesliga.

His performances also earned him a place in Ivory Coast’s squad for the World Cup in North America, where he started all four matches.

Yet his journey to football’s biggest stage was far from straightforward.

After moving to the United States as a teenager, the Abidjan-born winger developed with AS Frenzi, a semi-professional youth team linked to Florida’s DME Academy. He helped the side win the United Premier Soccer League title in 2023 and was praised for his “extraordinary” contribution.

But when he was offered to clubs looking for young talent, Bournemouth, Crystal Palace, Olympiacos and Rangers all declined.

MLS opportunities also failed to materialise.

Clubs missed their chance

Todd Eason, who worked with Diomande at DME, believes clubs failed to recognise his potential early enough.

“I think he did slip through the cracks,” Eason told FourFourTwo after Diomande’s move to Madrid.

“We were in Daytona, 45 minutes from Orlando City, and at the time, I had told some representatives at Orlando City, ‘Hey, I’ve got a kid coming that looks pretty special, and I would love him to come down and train with the B team.’ But they just kept delaying and delaying.”

Eason added: “I was very disappointed that Orlando City wouldn’t come 45 minutes to watch him or at least take them into camp.”

Eventually, Spanish side Leganés took the gamble.

They signed Diomande for just under $2 million in November 2024 and handed him his professional debut the following January. Six months and only 10 appearances later, Leipzig paid more than $20 million to take him to Germany.

His value then exploded.

A year after arriving at Leipzig, Diomande became a $145 million Real Madrid player, while Leganés also secured an additional $7-8 million through a sell-on clause.

Now, the teenager stands on the verge of another defining moment.

Real Madrid host Inter Milan at the Bernabéu on Tuesday, September 8, with kickoff scheduled for 3:00 p.m. ET. For Diomande, it could be the night his remarkable journey reaches Europe’s biggest stage.
