Yan Diomande increases competition for Vinicius at Real Madrid after AFCON 2027 qualifiers display

Ivorian winger Yan Diomande has increased the competition for places at Real Madrid after producing an impressive performance in his country’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Somalia.

Diomande, who recently joined the Spanish giants, operates primarily on the left wing, the same position preferred by Brazilian forward Vinicius Junior.

The 20-year-old can also play on the right, but his performance against Somalia on Tuesday underlined why he is particularly effective from the left.

Diomande makes his impact without scoring

Diomande did not score or provide an assist in Ivory Coast’s match against Somalia, but his performance was influential as he repeatedly created problems for the opposition defence.

According to Mundo Deportivo, the Ivorian completed five of his six attempted dribbles, registered three shots and created three chances for his team-mates.

Although Somalia are not regarded as one of Africa’s strongest sides, they defended in a compact shape, presenting the kind of challenge that requires a winger to find ways to create space and break defensive lines.

Diomande regularly moved inside when confronted by defenders and used his dribbling ability when space opened up.

His ability to make something happen when he received the ball was one of the notable features of his performance.

Mourinho faces selection decision

The display has raised questions over whether Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho could eventually turn to Diomande on the left side of his attack at Vinicius’ expense.

Diomande’s ability to operate on either flank gives Mourinho another tactical option, although his strongest performances have come from the left.

His latest showing for Ivory Coast could therefore add to the competition for a starting position when he returns to club football.

The Ivorian’s confidence and willingness to take on defenders also suggest that he may not require an extended adaptation period if given regular opportunities by Mourinho.

Vinicius faces increased competition

Vinicius remains an established player who has demonstrated his quality for both Real Madrid and Brazil.

However, Mundo Deportivo noted that the Brazilian has struggled to reproduce his best form consistently in recent matches.

That has created an opportunity for Diomande to put pressure on him, particularly if the Ivorian continues to produce performances that combine direct running, dribbling and chance creation.
