Yan Diomande impresses despite Real Madrid derby defeat

Yan Diomande delivered one of Real Madrid’s few bright moments despite the team’s difficult 2-1 defeat to Atletico Madrid in Sunday’s derby.

The Ivorian winger replaced Vinicius Júnior shortly after Atletico opened the scoring, entering a match that had already turned against Madrid. The visitors were reduced to ten men following Dean Huijsen’s dismissal, and their problems deepened when Atletico scored again only five minutes after Diomande came on.

Rather than disappear under the pressure, the young attacker immediately brought urgency to Madrid’s left flank. His speed, direct running and willingness to take on defenders gave Jose Mourinho’s side a much-needed attacking outlet.

Diomande played 36 minutes, completing four of six dribbles, making 90 percent of his passes and winning nine of 12 duels. No player on the pitch completed more dribbles during the match.

His influence has also strengthened the argument that he is more effective on the left than the right. With the international break approaching, Mourinho must decide whether to continue relying on Vinicius or give Diomande a more prominent role.

After two impressive appearances, the teenager is making it increasingly difficult to remain only a substitute.
