Yamal’s old joke with Cucurella faces a Clasico reality check

Lamine Yamal’s playful warning to Marc Cucurella will be tested on the pitch when Barcelona meet Real Madrid in Sunday’s Clasico at Spotify Camp Nou.

The two Spain internationals are set to face each other after Yamal joked about Cucurella’s move to Real Madrid in the summer of 2026. The exchange, reported by Sport, has added a personal edge to one of the key individual battles in the match.

Yamal discussed the possibility of facing his former international team-mate during an interview with Tiempo de Juego on Cadena COPE last June. Asked whether the pair had imagined their potential duels in the Clasico, or exchanged jokes about them, the Barcelona forward replied with confidence.

“I told him he would start the first match, and in the second he would be on the bench, because I would skin him alive,” Yamal said, laughing.

The comment attracted attention because of the openly challenging tone Yamal used when speaking about his friend and rival. Rather than treating the prospect of facing Cucurella as a routine contest, he predicted that the Real Madrid defender would struggle to contain him and turned the expected meeting into a running joke between the two players.

Sunday’s match will provide the first opportunity to see whether that rivalry can be carried from their conversations into a Clasico. It will also be Cucurella’s first appearance in the fixture wearing a Real Madrid shirt.

If both players are named in their starting line-ups, Cucurella will have the demanding task of dealing with one of Barcelona’s most effective dribblers and one of their players most capable of changing the course of a match. His defensive performance could therefore have a significant bearing on the contest.

Yamal’s words from June now carry greater weight as the game approaches. What began as a light-hearted exchange and a personal challenge between two players will become a direct battle on the pitch, under the pressure and significance that traditionally surrounds the Clasico.

Confidence has been one of Yamal’s defining qualities, and the teenager has never been reluctant to show his strong personality when discussing opponents. He will now have the chance to demonstrate that his prediction was more than a joke.

Cucurella, meanwhile, can answer the claim in the only place that ultimately matters: on the field.
