Yamal’s brilliant season ends in untimely blow
Lamine Yamal’s season has come to a painful early end, but the Barcelona youngster can still look back on his most prolific campaign yet for the club.
The 18-year-old suffered a serious muscle injury during Barcelona’s win over Celta Vigo on Wednesday night, damaging his hamstring after powerfully striking a penalty that proved to be the only goal of the game. Subsequent tests confirmed he will miss the remainder of the season, a major blow for both the player and the team.
Even so, Yamal has just completed his best-ever goalscoring season since breaking into the Barcelona first team, hitting 24 goals in all competitions, six more than the 18 he managed last year.
On top of his goals, he has also provided 18 assists in 45 appearances, taking him to an impressive 42 goal contributions. It is hard not to wonder how high those numbers might have gone had he stayed fit, with the 50 mark well within reach.
Now the focus shifts from records to recovery, as the young star races against time to regain fitness and make Spain’s squad for the 2026 World Cup, where he is expected to play a key role if available.
