Former Real Madrid coach and current Laureus ambassador Fabio Capello has weighed in on the growing comparisons between Barcelona’s young sensation Lamine Yamal and football legend Lionel Messi.
The Italian tactician, known for his astute observations, has urged caution in drawing parallels between the two players.
Yamal, born to a Moroccan father and an Equatorial Guinean mother, has been making waves in the football world with his exceptional performances for Barcelona.
The 17-year-old’s rapid rise through the ranks has inevitably led to comparisons with the club’s greatest ever player, Lionel Messi.
However, Capello, speaking in his capacity as a Laureus ambassador, has offered a more measured perspective on the young star’s potential.
“He’s a kid who is doing important things. When he started at Barcelona, it was said that he was the new Messi and no, he doesn’t reach that level.
“He’s an extraordinary, spectacular, top player, but he doesn’t have Messi’s genius.”
Capello’s comments come at a time when Yamal continues to break records and set new benchmarks in European football.
The young forward has already become the youngest goalscorer in La Liga history and has made significant contributions in high-profile matches, including El Clásico.
While discussing Barcelona’s rising star, Capello also shared his thoughts on Real Madrid’s current form.
“With the players they have, they are a spectacular team,” he remarked. “It is worth going to the stadium and watching them play”.
