Yamal double helps Spain sweep aside Croatia as England claim first Nations League win

Spain moved top of Group A4 in the UEFA Nations League after Lamine Yamal-inspired victory over Croatia, while England secured their first win of the campaign with a 2-0 success against the Czech Republic.

Yamal opened the scoring for Spain after just two minutes, but Croatia levelled through Dion Beljo in the 28th minute.

Spain restored their advantage three minutes later when Marc Pubill headed past Croatia goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic to give the hosts a 2-1 lead at half-time.

Yamal added his second goal in the 63rd minute to strengthen Spain’s position, before substitute Nico Williams completed the scoring in the 89th minute.

The result leaves Spain alone at the top of Group A4 in League A with six points from their opening two matches.

England earned their first points of the campaign by beating the Czech Republic 2-0 at Sinobo Stadium in the Czech Republic.

Anthony Gordon put England ahead two minutes after the interval, before Harry Kane doubled their lead in the 69th minute.

England and Croatia are both on three points, but the Three Lions occupy second place because of their superior goal difference. Luka Modric’s Croatia are third, while the Czech Republic remain bottom without a point after losing both of their opening matches.

Spain will face the Czech Republic in the next round of fixtures, while England will play Croatia.

The current international break will then conclude with the fourth round of matches, with Croatia meeting Spain and England taking on the Czech Republic.
